Finding a Therapist

CONSULT ONLINE SOURCES
Your insurance company probably lists mental health providers, but Alma, Headway, ZocDoc, and similar directories will tell you which are actually accepting new clients.

ASK FRIENDS
Don’t be afraid to ask a friend or loved one to lead the search. Others might recommend a therapist who, even if booked solid, may suggest someone who’s not.

CONSIDER A NEWCOMER
Try your local university’s psychology clinic, where graduate students are being trained. The clinics often have a shorter waitlist than private practices and will be less expensive, but care is supervised. The same holds for clinicians who have earned degrees but are logging hours in pursuit of a professional license.

CHECK YOUR WORK BENEFITS
Many employers maintain a free Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which can prove efficient in connecting you with help.
